How to make Hmong Jello

Making Hmong jello is very easy.  It is great for all occasions.  All you need are a few ingredients! Let's get started.

  • 1 cup of Knox Unflavored Gelatine (if you can find the 16 oz can it will save you lots of $$)
  • 1 can of coconut milk (13 oz can)
  • 5 cups of hot water
  • 1 and 1/2 cup of sugar
  • add small amount of salt (optional)
  • add drops of smell flavoring (cov tsw tsw qaab rau nabvam) OPTIONAL

  1. Add sugar to a large bowl.
  2. Measure out 5 cups of boiling water to a big bowl. (becareful cos it's hot!)
  3. Then add the water to dissolve the sugar.
  4. Add coconut milk and stir.
  5. Lastly, add the Knox unflavored gelatine.
  6. Divide the mixture into three equal parts.
  7. Add food coloring as you wish.
  8. In a large pan, pour one color mixture and place in the refrigerator until firm (usually 15 minutes, depends on the temperature of your fridge).
  9. When the layer is firm, add another layer.
  10. Once it's all solid, cut it up into smaller pieces!

Where to find the large can of unflavored gelatin?
I bought a 16 oz can of Knox Unflavored gelatin at a large American grocery supermarket. Here in Madison, WI I bought it at Woodman's.  If you cannot find the 16 oz can, you can buy the individual unflavored gelatin packages at any supermarket.  It is cheaper to get the 16 oz can if you plan to make a lot of jello! You can make a few batches with the 16 oz can!

Where to find the powder food coloring like the one in the video?
I bought the Swad food coloring at my local asian grocery store.  If you cannot find powder food coloring, you can use liquid food coloring too.  Powder form just makes the colors brighter but any coloring would work.

I hope you enjoy this recipe.  Try it with different colors and see how it turns out!  Please subscribe to my youtube channel for more updates and new videos!

Where did you get the powder food coloring?  I checked in all my stores and they don't carry them.  It seems to only be sold online or baking stores.  I might just have to buy online because the colors you used were so beautiful, like paj ntaub.  Thanks for teaching and sharing.  So happy

You can probably find them at an indian grocery store.  The powder I use is an indian brand called Swad.  :-) Good luck!

Question - Since I can't find the 16 oz can gelatin.. How many packets of the individual gelatin would I need for this? I know that there are 4 to a box. So how many box? Thanks for sharing!

Hi, I am not sure how many packages you have to buy to make it equal a cup.  I have a general idea that you will have to buy a lot of packages though since each package only contains a small amount of unflavored gelatin. It probably will get costly cos each small package is not cheap.

by sophie on Fri, 12/02/2011 - 14:45

So if you buy 16 individual bag of the gelatine which only contains 4 bag in a package...would it make one cup or you have to buy more?

by Annie on Fri, 12/02/2011 - 17:20

Hi Sophie, I'm not exactly sure what the measurements are that are in the 1 envelope of the unflavored gelatin.  I think you will have to buy a lot of envelopes and then pour it into a 1 cup measuring cup.  If you do try it, let me know how many envelopes it takes you to fill 1 cup.

by maynas on Fri, 12/09/2011 - 13:04

it take a good 4 boxes...

Thanks for ur recipe... i will try this one.. thanks alot..

by Annie on Tue, 10/25/2011 - 18:53

Hi Xai, good luck! I hope you like the recipe.  For more tender jello, use 3/4 cup unflavored gelatin.

by lida on Wed, 10/26/2011 - 19:06

I was wondering, how big the cup have to be? i mean its have  to be a long or short cup? thanks

by Annie on Wed, 10/26/2011 - 19:45

I use the standard measuring cup you can find at any store.  If you plan to keep the jello in the fridge, don't use 1 cup of gelatin because it will get harder.  3/4 cup of gelatin is just about right.

by kj on Fri, 11/18/2011 - 13:40

i made it and it turned out good but with 1 cup of gelatin it was really hard so i tried another one with 1/2 cup of gelantin and it was to wiggly. What can i do to make it not so hard and gooey. thanks so much!!

by Annie on Fri, 11/18/2011 - 17:01

I usually go anywhere between 3/4 cup and 1 cup ... It also depends on the kind of coconut milk you use also.  I like to use the thick coconut milk.  The watery dessert coconut milk you will need 1 cup unflavored gelatin.  Good luck!

Hi there,I live in Madison too, what grocery store did you buy the food color from?

by Annie on Sun, 11/27/2011 - 13:12

Hi Kia, you can get it from Yue Wah on South Park Street.  It's the store next to McDonald's.

What kind of coconut did you use?

by Annie on Mon, 12/12/2011 - 17:50

You can use any brand of coconut milk.  Here's a tip when looking for coconut for this kind of dessert.  Shake the can, if it is watery it means there is not a lot of coconut cream.  If you shake the can, and it is heavy and you can't feel a lot of movement, this means that can has a lot of coconut cream.  The thicker the coconut cream, the more solid this dessert is.  You just have to adjust for it when you put in the gelatin.

thanks for this recipe! my husband showed my daughter this video and so she has been constantly reminding me to make if for a week now...so i will be attempting this for the first time ever. where can you get the gelatin from? do regular grocery stores carry them?

by Annie on Sun, 01/08/2012 - 11:29

Hi, regular grocery stores should carry them.  If you can't find the large can, you probably have to buy them as individual packages like jello.  I buy mines from a store called Woodmans.

by Yangsha on Sat, 12/31/2011 - 15:41

I have tried the Knox Gelatine jello before and didn't like it very much.  I find that w/5 cups of h2o is still very firm.  I prefer the must stiffer, but yet still on the firm side type of texture for Hmong jellos.  The Knox brand do hold the layers better than the asian Telephone brand.  I don't know if you have tried it w/only 3cups of h2o or less to see if it even makes a difference? BTW, your recipe looks awesome!  You did a wonderful job it and it looks pretty.  I now know what powder brand people are talking about regarding food coloring......Thanks!

by Annie on Sun, 01/08/2012 - 11:31

Hi, thanks for your comments.  I've done a lot of trial and error with this recipe.  For me, I like my jello a bit firm but not too firm.  Coconut milk has a lot to do with the consistency too.  Some coconut milk are thicker than others and this produces a firmer texture.

by Linda on Mon, 01/23/2012 - 00:02

Hey bay yang,

Just wanted to share with you that I found mine at Walmart, so I'm pretty sure that your local Walmart should also carry it too. Its in the jello/pudding isle. I've also seen it at Festival Foods too. Hope you find it!

by mcyang on Sat, 02/11/2012 - 20:21

by Knu on Sat, 02/11/2012 - 22:50

Hey I was wondering if I can use agar instead of gelatin?

by Annie on Sun, 02/12/2012 - 09:57

Yes, it might have a slight difference in texture but should work the same.

by Gaolee Vang on Tue, 02/21/2012 - 16:31

This is a lot more simple than I thought. I'm tempted to make this colorful jello. I will let you know how it turns out. LOL. :) Thanks again for the great recipe and vids. ;)
